Frequently Asked Questions

Many people are turning to tinctures and natural medicines as an alternative way of living because they appreciate the potential benefits they offer. Here are a few reasons why some individuals prefer natural remedies over pharmaceutical drugs:

  1. Holistic Approach: Natural medicines often take a holistic approach to health focusing on treating the root causes of the ailment rather than just alleviating symptoms. They aim to support the body’s natural function and healing process increasing overall well-being.
  2. Fewer side effects: Natural remedies when used appropriately tend to have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs. This is because they are derived from natural sources and often contain fewer synthetic chemicals.
  3. Personalization: Natural medicines can be tailored to individual needs. Herbalists and practitioners of natural medicine take into account a person’s unique condition, lifestyle, and specific health concerns when formulating remedies. This personalized approach can lead to more targeted and effective results.
  4. Long-term Health: Natural remedies often focus on promoting long-term health and prevention rather than just addressing immediate symptoms. They aim to support the body’s natural balance and strengthen its ability to heal itself over time.
  5. Sustainability: Many people appreciate the sustainability aspect of natural medicines. They often contain renewable resources such as herbs and plants which can be grown and harvested in an environmentally friendly manner.

IMPORTANT: Natural remedies may not always be suitable for every situation or condition. In some cases, pharmaceutical drugs may be necessary and beneficial. It’s always best to consult with a trusted healthcare provider to determine the best approach to address your specific needs.

A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract made by soaking herbs in a solvent, usually alcohol, to extract their beneficial properties. The process of making a tincture involves a few steps:

  1. Herb Selection: Choose high-quality dried or fresh herbs that are suitable for making tinctures. Different herbs have different properties and benefits, so select ones that align with your desired outcome.
  2. Herb Preparation: If using dried herbs, you can crush or grind them to increase their surface area. If using fresh herbs chop them into smaller pieces. This helps in extracting the active compounds efficiently and effectively. The ratio for dried herbs is 1 part herb to 5 part solvent and for fresh the ratio is 1 to 1.
  3. Solvent Selection: Alcohol, typically high-proof vodka or grain alcohol, is commonly used as the solvent for making tinctures. Alcohol acts as a preservative and helps extract the medical properties of the herbs. However, other solvents like glycerin or vinegar can also be used for alcohol-free alternatives. NOTE: The amount of alcohol in 1 suggested adult serving size of a tincture equates to approximately the same amount as a ripe banana.
  4. Extraction Process: Place the prepared herbs in a glass jar and cover them completely with the chosen solvent. Make sure to use a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. (If the lid is metal, place parchment paper in between the lid and mouth of the jar to avoid metal seepage in your tincture). Allow the mixture to sit for at least 4-6 weeks in a cool dark place. Remember to shake the jar daily to ensure proper extraction.
  5. Straining and Storage: After the desired extraction time, strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the herb particles. Transfer the resulting liquid, which now contains the concentrated herbal extract, into amber glass bottles for storage. The amber color of the glass protects the tincture from exposure to light and heat that will cause degradation. Store the tincture in a cool dark place to maintain its potency.

General guidelines on how to use tinctures:**

  1. Shaking: It’s a great practice to give your tincture bottle a good shake before each use. This helps ensure that the herbal components are well-mixed and evenly distributed.
  2. Dilution: While some tinctures can be consumed orally and undiluted, it’s often recommended to mix them in a small amount of water, juice, or even a smoothie. This can help with taste and make it easier and more enjoyable to consume.
  3. Consultation and Drug Interaction: If you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before using herbal tinctures or any other herbal products. Your healthcare team can help determine if there are any potential risks.

It is important to store your tinctures properly as it will extend their shelf life. The longevity of tinctures depends on various factors such as the ingredients used, storage conditions, and the presence of natural preservatives. Generally if stored in a cool dark place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or moisture, tinctures can last several years. It’s important to note that the potency and efficacy of the tincture may gradually and naturally diminish over time. It’s always a good idea to check for any changes in color or smell before using an older tincture. The taste of an older tincture can also help determine its freshness, however, it’s important to test a single drop before taking a full suggested dose. If you have specific concerns about the shelf life of your tincture it is best to consult the advice of a qualified herbalist or natural medicine practitioner. They can provide more specific guidance based on the ingredients and formulation of your tincture.
